WW1 Battlefields of the Somme Tour

The Somme was the scene of major battles during World War I.

On July 1, 1916, the Franco-British offensive began. At Ovillers-la-Boisselle, the explosion of the Lochnagar Crater marked the first day—the bloodiest in the history of the British Army. Despite heavy losses, French forces advanced more rapidly to the south.

In July, a phase of attrition set in. South African troops distinguished themselves through their heroic resistance during the terrible Battle of Delville Wood. Later, the Canadians captured Courcelette, while ANZAC forces were worn down at Pozières.

In 1918, the Second Battle of the Somme began. American forces (notably the 27th and 30th Divisions) distinguished themselves alongside the British, heroically breaking through the Hindenburg Line at Bellicourt. Today, the Thiepval Memorial honors those who fell in these fierce battles.
