Admittedly, Napoleon I staged a coup d’état amid the turmoil of the Revolution to save France from stagnation, and his economic and legal reforms profoundly modernized society.

The fate of his nephew, Napoleon III, was similar: hampered by the Constitution of the Second Republic, he staged his coup d’état in December 1851. Although controversial, his reign of nearly twenty years adapted France to the Industrial Revolution. Under his leadership and that of Prefect Haussmann, Paris was transformed into the “City of Light” and gained international renown thanks to the World’s Fairs.
